The First Sixth Graders

The Full Circle Farm staff waited eagerly as they watched the first group of sixth graders make their way toward the garden from a distance.  Once inside the gates the entire group circled up for some guidelines and farm rules.  The kids actively participated; making suggestions for future farm visits such as bringing bottled water or wearing a hat and sunscreen.  Before Ildi Carlisle-Cummins even revealed the neatly written sheet of rules the students had already pinpointed them all, most importantly rule number one: be respectful.  After going over the rules with the class the students began their tour of the garden first with a quick lesson on composting and the help of a brave student volunteer.

As the group made their way through the garden, the students were offered a variety of freshly picked (and yes, washed) cherry tomatoes and beans grown from right underneath their feet, literally!  Though some students were skeptical at first, the full bowl of veggies would be completely empty by the tours end due to many second and third helpings.

Despite the hot weather the students remained interested in what the farm was all about, asking questions and offering up their answers to the questions posed by the staff.  The kids took particular interest in the flowers planted at the ends of many of the rows that attract beneficial insects, and of course the tractor.  Ultimately the first tour proved to be a great success, turning many of the sixth grade students into eager young farmers in the making.
